Sarah Bailey Named Interim Executive Director of Komen Charlotte

January 24, 2020

The Susan G. Komen Charlotte Board of Directors is pleased to announce Sarah Bailey as Interim Executive Director effective February 15, 2020. As we welcome Sarah to her new role, we must also say goodbye to our dear friend, Stamie Despo, as Executive Director.  Stamie recently made the difficult decision to return to New York to be closer to family and we wish her well.

Over the past two and a half years, Stamie has played a critical role in the success of Komen Charlotte by creating a culture of philanthropy that will continue to inspire us while leading and developing a team dedicated to a vision of a world without breast cancer.  Stamie has been a key contributor and catalyst to the social well-being of our community through not only her civic leadership at Susan G. Komen, but also through her collaboration with other non-profits in the community and state. Stamie’s exemplary service and contributions have made a positive difference in the lives of countless women and families in our community.

We are confident that Sarah, currently serving as Senior Director of Community Health at Komen Charlotte, will provide strong leadership during this time of transition.  Sarah has been the heart, soul and strategic thought leader of Komen Charlotte’s mission since 2011. We know she will continue to passionately and energetically advance the organization’s mission in this interim capacity.   The Komen Board has begun an external search with a target of April 1st to have a new Executive Director in place.

But the Komen Charlotte mission is bigger than any one person.  Our strong community of board of directors, partners, sponsors, donors and volunteers works collectively to execute programs and initiatives in our 13-county service area as we strive to reach the Bold Goal of reducing the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% by 2026 in the US.  Komen Charlotte will continue to help fuel research, advocate for patients and support people facing breast cancer locally through a variety of direct patient-centered services and by collaborating with area providers to remove barriers and connect people to needed care across the greater Charlotte area.

With your continued support, we are thankful for how far we have come and optimistic about the journey ahead. Please consider joining us for our 2nd largest fundraiser, Laugh for the Cure, on March 19th. Laugh for the Cure generates hundreds of laughs and thousands of dollars for Komen Charlotte to continue to make a difference.
