Susan G. Komen Charlotte welcomes Stamie Despo as Executive Director

CHARLOTTE, NC, December 14, 2017 – The Susan G. Komen Charlotte Board of Directors announced today that Stamie Despo, MAT has been named executive director. Despo has been serving as interim executive director since early October.

Despo initially joined the organization earlier in 2017 as senior director of fund development, following four years with University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While at UNCC, she established and led alumni engagement and fundraising efforts for The William States Lee College of Engineering. Despo was a founder and treasurer for Children’s Art for Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc., and continues to support art therapy efforts for children as an advisor at Massachusetts General Hospital. Despo is currently a member of the Dreamcatcher Society at Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, which supports Levine Children’s Hospital. She has an undergraduate degree in Economics from Smith College, Cum Laude, and is a graduate of Duke University’s Certificate in Non-Profit Management.

Susan G. Komen Charlotte is an affiliate of Susan G. Komen, one of the most widely-known breast cancer organizations in the world. Komen Charlotte raises funds through events such as the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, Laugh for the Cure®, BCC Rally, Serve for the Cure, Kickin’ It Challenge, Build for the Cure, and a variety of community events hosted by corporate partners, small businesses, faith communities, schools and volunteer organizations. The affiliate’s local service area includes the following counties: Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Richmond, Rowan, Stanly, Union and York.

Each year, Komen Charlotte invests 75 percent of net revenue raised into local community health programs and 25 percent into breast cancer research.  Since 1997, more than $16 million has been awarded in local community health grants and nearly $6 million to research.
